ANotefrom1There’s much to do and much to see in the SCV this month, so get ready for a busy May!
Over the last decade we have seen a remarkable growth in population. Just as the city continues to grow, the need for updated services, state of the art equipment, and hospital expansion becomes more apparent.  Thanks to the generosity of community members and businesses who support events such as the Frontier Toyota/Henry Mayo Drive Safe Golf Classic, those needs can be met.  Now in its 42nd year, we are pleased to once again sponsor the Golf Classic, and support the hospital and its endeavors. The Golf Classic will be held on Saturday, May 9, at the Valencia Country Club.  See opposite page for our cover story and learn more about the Emergency Department, Golf Classic and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital as they celebrate their 40th anniversary.

As you peruse through the pages of this issue, you will see that we have created a section devoted to Old Town Newhall. We have highlighted many of the retailers and restaurant owners who proudly call Newhall their home in our special section beginning on page 31.
Start the month off right at YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day event on May 2 at Heritage Park in Valencia.  Turn to page 18 for more information.
Year after year we look forward to attending the Child & Family Center’s popular Taste of the Town event on May 3 at Mann Biomedical Park.  It’s always fun to spend the day with friends, indulging in the tastes of delicious food and drinks from the area as well as enjoying music all to support a great cause.
Saturday, May 9 is proving to be yet another busy day for the SCV!  Get out your walking shoes and join the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at their largest fundraising event-the Great Strides Walk.  Last year’s event raised approximately $112,000. Please join us in our continuing efforts to make CF stand for Cure Found. See opposite page for details about the walk.
Another walk occurring just a little north of the SCV is the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event that will take place at the Outlets at Tejon.  Take steps to end violence against women and children and support a serious cause.  Turn to page 24 for more information.
Get your baking skills and sweet tooth ready for the SCV Youth Project’s 7th Annual Sweet Charity Cake Auction & Competition.  The event, also on May 9, will take place at the picturesque Robinson Ranch Golf Club.  See page 10 for details.
With the beautiful weather and great trails our community has to offer, it’s no surprise cycling is so popular in the SCV. We are pleased to welcome the Amgen Tour of California to our town on May 14.  Be sure and check out page 16 and 17 for more information about the Amgen Tour.
On Saturday, May 16, the Soroptimist International of SCV will be hosting their Gentlemen for a Cause at the Tesoro Clubhouse in Valencia. Come bid on professional services offered by our community’s most talented gentlemen! See page 6 for details.
A very popular and well-attended event is the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of the SCV.  The overnight event begins on Saturday, May 16.  Join thousands of supporters at Central Park and get “Back to the Cure”. For more information about Relay for Life of the SCV, turn to page 8.
End the month with the Santa Clarita Master Chorale and College of the Canyons as they present Defying Gravity with Stephen Schwarz.  A Grammy award winning Broadway and film composer, Stephen will be taking the stage at the Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons on May 31. See page 25 to learn more about Stephen as well as ticket information.
Five entertaining years and $850,000 fundraising dollars later, and the Dancing With Our Stars is back!  While the event is still a few months away, make sure you mark your calendars for Friday, August 28. Twenty-one celebrity dancers are gearing up to raise money for their non-profit organization for the highly anticipated event!  See page 13 to see who will be participating as well as details about the event.
Don’t forget to show your love and appreciation this Mother’s Day and thank her for all the wonderful things she has done for you. See page 50 for great Mother’s Day gift ideas.
We have also provided you with a comprehensive Physical Fitness Guide, beginning on page 121 to help you get into shape this summer. Be sure to also check out our Medical Guide, beginning on page 134, bringing you many listings on all types of medical offices and services offered in our valley to help you find the right professional.
To all the mothers, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day.

Until next time,
Linda, Moe and Alex Hafizi
