Have Fun In the Sun at the Chili Cook Off

by | Oct 1, 2015 | Community

Bring the whole family to taste more than 22-plus chili recipes by L.A.’s finest, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The Fun In the Sun Chili Cook Off takes place Saturday, October 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jack Bones Equestrian Center in Castaic, benefitting Special Olympics Santa Clarita and Tri-Valley, and is expected to draw thousands of people again this year.
The Sheriff’s Department first sponsored the Chili Cook Off more than 25 years ago.  Since then, chili chefs have been competing in numerous categories for awards in culinary skills, booth decoration, and team spirit.
When your belly is full, enjoy the classic car show, vendors, kids’ zone, climbing wall, face painting and more for only $10. This year, participants will enjoy live bands, military displays, crafters, and vendors.
In addition to the chili booths, other food items will be provided at reasonable prices. Adult beverages will be available as well, to those who provide appropriate proof of age. The event is only $10 per person; this includes a chili tasting card.
“This is one of my favorite events. It is a true partnership between Special Olympics and Law Enforcement,” said Laura Mayo, Regional Director, Special Olympics. “ L.A. County Sheriff’s really puts on a quality event. Last year the Chili Cook Off raised $22,000 for Special Olympics Santa Clarita and Tri-Valley. This year, our goal is to raise more money to allow us to provide sports and training to more athletes with intellectual disabilities.”
The Jack Bones Equestrian Center is accessible via the Parker Road exit off the northbound Interstate 5 to Castaic Road south. Continue ½ mile to Tapia Canyon Road east, and follow the signs to the event.  Additional sponsorships and vendors for the event are welcome and encouraged.
