Making a Difference Today

by | Oct 1, 2015 | Community

Just about everyone knows that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The proliferation of pink ribbons, events, news, and even sports figures wearing pink serves as a constant reminder that we are still fighting this insidious disease, still striving for a cure, still dealing with its effects on our society. But what constitutes awareness, and what is the goal?
Founded in 1985 as a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and anti-breast cancer drug maker Imperial Chemical Industries, the campaign was originally meant to promote mammography as the most effective way to fight breast cancer. Eventually, “awareness” evolved and expanded to include efforts to support breast cancer research and the need for a cure. Organization of regional “walks” became the popular way to raise that awareness and much-needed funds aimed at finding new drugs, treatments and remedies.
In 1992, the iconic pink ribbon was adopted by NBCAM as its official symbol, and any and all breast cancer groups and organizations quickly employed it. The ribbon has come to represent solidarity among those afflicted with breast cancer, and the support from those around them.
Finding a cure is paramount. Every day that a cancer patient suffers or loses the battle is one day too many. However, awareness is not only about research. The burden on those already fighting cancer’s debilitating effects, both emotionally and financially, is enormous and can interfere with the healing process. For local non-profit Circle of Hope, NBCAM and the pink ribbon mean renewed opportunities to help those in the Santa Clarita Valley with breast cancer. What better way to help than to offer emotional and educational support, by and alongside those similarly afflicted? To assist with the negotiation of medical bills, and the payment of those bills? To listen to stories, and offer a shoulder?
Awareness can mean many things to many people. Being aware that your friends, neighbors, and acquaintances right here in the SCV need assistance is a big part of NBCAM. With your support — personal donations, or those through your business — Circle of Hope can help you help them, and together we can “make a difference today for a brighter future tomorrow.”
Tickets are still available for the 12th Annual Afternoon Tea on October 10, held at Robinson Ranch. Watch for opportunities to support Circle of Hope when you see the “Paint the Town Pink” logo displayed throughout Santa Clarita.
Proceeds from all events go to further Circle of Hope’s mission of providing financial, emotional, and educational support for uninsured and underinsured individuals undergoing cancer treatment, their families, and the community. As always, 100 percent of the proceeds remain in the Santa Clarita Valley. Circle of Hope is a 501(c)3 #20-068032. Visit www.circleofhopeinc.org.
