Your Guide to Surviving the Holidays

The holidays are upon us, bringing warm and fuzzy feelings of family gatherings, gifts and giving, and usually about 10 pounds of fat gained between Halloween and the New Year. What can you do to have everything this holiday season except the latter? Here are a few easy strategies that can help you survive the holidays:
Make time and workout at least twice a week. Usually life gets hectic this time of year and your workout is probably one of the first things to disappear off of your schedule. Your best bet is to get it done first thing in the morning and, if your workout is effective, you should be able to get it done in under an hour. When you’re only working out twice a week it should be in the form of a strength/metabolic program that will get and keep your metabolism revving over the long run. Join an early morning class and commit to going a minimum of twice a week right through the holidays.
Plan to eat healthy at least 80 percent of the time. This means that if you eat five meals a day, seven days a week, you have seven meals to enjoy as a splurge. This will keep you maintaining your current weight and size.
If you want to lose fat over the holidays and look better than all of your friends at this year’s New Year’s Eve party, then stick to healthy nutrition 90 percent of the time, which means splurging only three meals a week. It’s surprising how quickly many people slip to 70 percent. Most people I meet that say they eat healthy “most of the time” are usually eating what they should about 70 percent of the time. Check yourself. This also includes alcohol – having a glass of wine is a splurge, even if what you ate with it was what you should be eating.
Take some down time for yourself over the holidays. Keeping your stress levels to a minimum will keep your body functioning optimally. Do something to manage your stress.
