Filming Continues to Increase in Santa Clarita
The City of Santa Clarita saw an increase in location filming in 2015, and the number of film permits reached an all-time high. The Santa Clarita Film Office reported 565 film permits and 1,372 location film days, which represents a 13 percent increase in permits and a two percent increase in film days compared to 2014. The estimated economic impact to the local community from location filming alone in 2015 was $30.9 million, which represents a four percent decrease compared to 2014 when the economic impact was $32.2 million.
Substantial growth in film permits confirms the City of Santa Clarita as a popular film location. Not included in the reported numbers are the film days and estimated economic benefit from filming that takes place on certified sound stages, which does not require a film permit.
“We continue to stay committed to making Santa Clarita a top choice for filming,” said Mayor Bob Kellar. “This is evidenced by the increasing number of permits and the number of locally-based shows here in Santa Clarita.”
More than half of the filming days for 2015 were attributed to television production, many of which are local Santa Clarita-based shows that currently include Blunt Talk, NCIS, Recovery Road, Stitchers, Switched at Birth and Westworld.
Other productions that filmed on location in Santa Clarita last year include popular television shows Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Cesar 911, Modern Family, Silicon Valley, and Scandal, along with feature films Behold My Heart, The Circle, LaLa Land, PeeWee’s Big Holiday and more.
Santa Clarita continues to be an ideal place for productions looking to film because it offers thousands of film-friendly locations that can double as almost any city in the world. The City Film Office offers low permitting fees, expedited permitting process, and is located within the entertainment industry’s coveted “Thirty Mile Zone.”
Many factors have contributed to the continued success of filming in Santa Clarita, including the California Film and Television Tax Credit Program, as well as the City’s own Film Incentive Program and Movie Ranch Overlay Zone.
