The History of Indian Food

 Indian cuisine offers a huge variety of dishes, appetizers, snacks, side dishes and desserts and has found countless fans throughout the world. As Indian restaurants have increased at such an amazing rate in part because of it’s variety combining all the different taste elements from salty, spicy and sweet is it any wonder this cuisine has so many fans! Because of the diversity and the four main regional cooking styles: North Indian cuisine, South Indian cuisine, East Indian cuisine and Western Indian cuisine you can taste everything from exotic and more spicy to dishes a bit more tamed down and the use of certain ingredients such as coconut milk to differentiate these areas.
If we are talking about the history of India then we need to also get into the country’s history of appetizers, snacks and hors d’oeuvres which is extremely rich and diverse. The Indian appetizer will stimulate your appetite. Many of their snacks are quite low in fat because they use a number of spices and herbs such as garlic, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, coriander instead of high fat content.  The use of potatoes is used a lot with the combination of spices so for example one of the oldest snacks in Indian food is made out of mashed potatoes, onions and coriander, the Alu Ki Tikki and the samosa appetizer which is more familiar is also made out of steamed potatoes, peas and vegetables and spices is well loved!
Indian cuisine is not only spicy and salty but sweet. Indian cuisine offers many sweet desserts and dishes from all the different regions of the country.  Rasgulla which is a syrupy dessert made from ball shaped dumplings of chhenna and semolina dough cooked in a light syrup made of sugar and is very popular!  Payasam or kheer which is of the Hindu culture and can be found at ceremonies, celebrations and feasts in the Souther regions. This dessert is a rice pudding of boiling rice, wheat, tapioca or vermicelli with milk and sugar and is flavored with raisins, cardammon, saffron, cashews, pistachios or almonds.  The Shrikhand is a creamy dessert made out of strained yogurt which leaves a thick yogurt cream and fruit is added like mangoes.
