Amgen Tour of California Returns to Santa Clarita May 16 – Hit the Trail Community Bike Ride among other cycling related events in May

by | May 1, 2016 | Community

The City of Santa Clarita returns as a host city for the Amgen Tour of California on Monday, May 16, for the Stage 2 Finish.  For only the second time in Amgen Tour of California history, the race will progress south to north, beginning in San Diego and travel through 12 additional host cities before a winner is named at the overall finish in Sacramento.
This year will mark the twelfth stage that Santa Clarita has hosted for the world-class event.  The Stage 2 Finish will have cyclists racing 92 miles from South Pasadena to Santa Clarita where they will finish along Lyons Avenue in front of the Old Town Newhall Library.
As is fitting for the largest outdoor sporting event in California, the Amgen Tour of California Lifestyle Festival will offer a super-sized, daylong celebration and gathering place for the thousands of spectators awaiting the exciting sprint to the finish.
Located on Main Street, near the finish line, the Amgen Tour of California Lifestyle Festival will open to the public at 11 a.m. and serves as a central hub for spectators to congregate among fellow race watchers, hear live music and watch the race live on outdoor video screens.
There will also be interactive experiences delivered by race partners and vendors, including cycling products and demos, ideas for healthful living, family activities, games, food and more.
Residents should plan ahead on Monday, May 16 to avoid delays due to a combination of hard and rolling closures throughout the eastern parts of Santa Clarita, including the Lyons Corridor and Old Town Newhall.  Additional affected areas include Sand Canyon, Placerita Canyon, Sierra Highway, The Old Road, Calgrove Blvd., Wiley Canyon Road and Lyons Ave.  Rolling closures will take place between 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, May 16 and are subject to a 45-minute delay.  Rolling closures will be released when cyclists have safely departed the area.  For a complete list of closures, locations and times, visit www.SantaClaritaTourofCA.com.
The month of May will also kick-off other bicycle related events, including the Hit the Trail community bike ride, an Amgen Tour of California Watch Party, and Bike to Work Day.
The Amgen Tour of California is being sponsored locally by Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, The Paseo Club, Snow Orthodontics, Solar City and UCLA Health.  Local media sponsors include: The Magazine of Santa Clarita, Signal Multimedia, KHTS Hometown Station AM 1220 and SCVTV.  For information on local events, road closures and opportunities to volunteer, go to: www.SantaClaritaTourofCA.com.
