DRIVE.FOCUS.LIVE
In an effort to increase safety on Santa Clarita streets, the City, in conjunction with the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department launched a traffic safety campaign, Drive.Focus.Live. The campaign, together with more enforcement, aims to change driving behaviors, including driving more slowly and less distracted.
It’s no secret that dangerous driving habits cause the majority of accidents on our local roadways. As a community, we can do better.
In 2015, Santa Clarita saw a 14 percent increase in traffic collisions, when compared to 2014. The majority of accidents involved speeding, following too closely, failure to yield, distracted driving, unsafe lane changes, traffic signal/sign violations and driving under the influence.
The most recent finding from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s annual survey that assesses and benchmarks the attitudes and behaviors of drivers revealed that the prevalence of unsafe driving behaviors are widespread including:
Red light running: More than a third (36 percent) of drivers admit to running red lights, yet 55 percent say it is a very serious threat and 73 percent say it is completely unacceptable.
Speeding (10+ mph) on residential streets: Nearly half of drivers report speeding (44 percent), yet 65 percent say it is completely unacceptable.
Texting/emailing: More than a quarter (27 percent) of drivers report typing or sending a text or email, yet 79 percent of drivers say it is a very serious threat to safety and 84 percent say it is completely unacceptable.
Over the last five years, City traffic engineers have modified 38 traffic signals for safety reasons. These improvements include signal timing, extension of left turn pockets and curb extensions that provide more room for pedestrians.
It is the City’s goal to generate awareness about unsafe driving habits so there is a significant decrease of incidents. Targeted enforcement on major thoroughfares, an education and outreach campaign and more discussion in the community will go a long way towards improved safety on our roadways.
Residents are encouraged to be responsible on our roadways and remember these FIVE to stay alive:
1. Stay within the posted speed limits
2. Don’t text and drive
