New at the Zoo “Baby” Giraffe Chad Debuts

by | Jun 1, 2016 | Community

A tall “baby” and tall tales are among the new attractions at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Known as one of the world’s most beautiful zoos, it’s also the only one where giraffes have ocean views.
A six-foot six-inch-tall, 191-pound bundle of Masai giraffe joy arrived in late March 2016. Male calf Chad brings the herd’s number to five, but it’ll soon be six – another calf is expected in July.  Giraffe feeding is offered most days, weather permitting.  A portion of the $7 cost goes to giraffe conservation.
An eight-foot-tall grizzly bear named Tiny stars in the live stage show “California Tales.”  He and his other puppet friends are back with a new “tall tale” based on a Native American myth in which Raven and Turtle use butterflies and a salt lick to get hilarious revenge on trickster Coyote. Natural behaviors by coyotes are explained by the trickster himself.
“Dino Doc” is a live show featuring the Zoo’s three high-tech dinosaurs – with help from volunteer “doctors” who give them check-ups, just like the real Zoo veterinarian. A “meet and greet” with the dinosaurs and cast immediately follows the show. Both shows are free with Zoo admission. Check Admissions for show times.
There’s gems in “them thar hills” – well, more accurately, near the Zoo hilltop. A wooden water tower marks the spot of Tiny’s Mining Camp, adjacent to the Barnyard.  Here guests pan for fossils, shark teeth, and gems. Purchase a bag of “ore,” then sift, shake, and pan for hidden treasures in the 12-foot long sluice box complete with running water, like ones used during the Gold Rush. It’s open daily and each miner is guaranteed a keepsake.
You don’t need kids in tow to enjoy the penguins, elephants, lions, and more at the charming, seaside Santa Barbara Zoo, the region’s most popular attraction. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit www.sbzoo.org
