Assistance League – Volunteers Make A Difference

by | Oct 1, 2016 | Community

“My name is Charlene. I am a relatively new member of Assistance League having just joined in October 2015.  I first became aware of Assistance League in the late ‘90’s when I began teaching for the Newhall School District at Wiley Canyon Elementary School.  At the time, Operation School Bellâ provided clothes, shoes and backpacks delivered to the school for students in need. When the identified students were pulled from the classroom to be given the items, I remember being concerned that they would be self-conscious upon their return. Quite the opposite! They all came in, beaming from ear-to-ear and exclaiming, “Look what we got!” and proceeded to show us.
I am still working for the Newhall School District, now as a part-time curriculum specialist at Peachland Elementary School. Over the years, I have seen the importance of Operation School Bell firsthand. Now that I have time to volunteer, I chose Assistance League, specifically to be a part of Operation School Bell.”
Many of our members are former teachers who also have become volunteers in Assistance League because they want to actively support struggling students/families. Some joined because they themselves were part of a struggling family as a child or even as an adult. Others may have known how difficult it was to have only hand-me-downs or only one or two sets of clothes for school.
During September and October, over 2,700 children referred by their schools will shop at Old Navy and Payless for school clothes and shoes. Our Assistance League volunteers will happily assist them. Money for this shopping spree is raised through sales at our Resale Store, located on Main Street in Newhall.  We are very fortunate to receive donations from individuals and businesses in our community who donate cash and services, as well as clean and gently used items to stock our Assistance League store. Our volunteers staff and manage this unique boutique filled with antiques, collectibles, clothing, games, books, shoes, jewelry, art and daily surprises.
You can make a difference too.  Volunteer, donate, and shop at Assistance League Resale.
