Cheyenne’s Incredible Story

by | Dec 29, 2016 | Community

Cheyenne Hughes is a student at Golden Valley High School who has battled tumors, surgeries, chemo and radiation treatments successfully for the last eight years, as well as a rare genetic disorder known as Familial Adenomatous Poluposis.  However, a new tumor was discovered at the base of her brain. On December 7, she underwent a surgery that, frankly, was so dangerous there was a chance she wouldn’t make it.  Please read the following message from her father, who wrote to Golden Valley Principal Sal Frias:
“I wanted to write an email to let you know what we found out about Cheyenne.  As we met with the surgeons, the final time before surgery, we were informed that there is a very high chance that Cheyenne will not make it off the surgery table.  If she does, she will never be the same as she will likely lose a lot of movement, if not all.  If we do nothing, she dies a horribly slow death.  We have decided to attempt the surgery to hopefully get a miracle.
Cheyenne has always been my hero as I have battled cancer for the last six years, and she has overcome so much that doctors said she would never overcome.  I believe if anyone is strong enough to pull through this surgery, it is my baby girl.  We have two weeks before the surgery, so we are making sure that she has the best time of her life, and we make many more memories together.
Thanksgiving was amazing with all the kids, even Chey, making parts of the meal.  Chey’s mashed potatoes were the best ever!!  On Friday our elf on the shelf returned from the North Pole with a present from Santa for Cheyenne that she really wanted. 🙂  Chey was really concerned that she won’t be home in time for Christmas, so we had Christmas morning for her today.  She hasn’t stopped smiling for days. 🙂
I will be bringing Cheyenne into school Monday and will make sure to talk with everyone.  She will not be able to attend the whole day as she has blood work that has to be done at Cedars-Sinai.  I wanted to make sure she could have a normal routine of getting up, ready for school and to see some of her favorite people at school before she had to go to the hospital.
I am attaching a link to a gofundme.com page for Cheyenne. In no way feel like you need to donate.  But I am sharing as this will be the place my wife and I keep everyone updated as a group, so we don’t have to send out individual updates.  Chey has touched the lives of so many around the world that this makes it easiest.
Please keep her in your thoughts as she needs all the prayers and positive energy she can get for this surgery.

Defying all odds, Cheyenne pulled through the surgery and did wonderfully!  Following her surgery, Cheyenne’s mother Amy wrote:
“She is a total miracle, everyone is amazed.  And we are sooooooo happy that things have gone so incredibly well up to this point.  We definitely had a Christmas miracle.  Thank you for your continued prayers and support.  I sincerely believe it was everyone’s positive comments and prayers that helped our baby pull through!”
