Running 101: Free Running Seminar at Henry Mayo Fitness and Health
If you love to run and want to run the right way, then Henry Mayo Fitness and Health has the class for you.
Speaker Kevin Rausch will be presenting “Running 101” on Thursday, March 30, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Henry Mayo Fitness and Health, 24525 Town Center Drive, Valencia. Participants will receive a free shirt and a light dinner will be provided—the class is part of the Center’s community education program.
In cooperation with the Outpatient Physical Therapy Department at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Henry Mayo Fitness and Health is launching an educational program for runners.
The class, which is geared toward high school athletes and adult competitive runners ages 30 to 65, will focus on running mechanics and injury prevention.
“Runners would benefit from running lessons more than anyone in any other sport,” Rausch said. “Getting better at your mechanics leads to faster times and less injuries. There’s a way to run better and fix your mechanics before you get hurt.”
Mechanics deal with the repetitive motions of running and how that impacts the body. In running, there are thousands of cyclical repetitions. Examples of some of the mechanics of running include size of stride, posture, and how your foot hits the ground.
“Your foot should be completely flat and hit the ground at the same time,” Rausch said. “In addition, posture and arm strength (swing) are critical components of how big of a stride you have.”
Rausch has worked with runners of all levels, from Olympic athletes to high school runners to 5K competitors. He’s a physical therapist and performance enhancer, as well as a Certified Running Coach. Currently he works with runners and cyclists to improve their mechanical efficiency and performance. His practice Rausch PT & Sport Performance is located in Laguna Niguel, Ca.
Thomas James “TJ” DiPrima, a physical therapist and athletic trainer outreach program coordinator at Henry Mayo Fitness and Health, said that good running mechanics is key to preventing injuries.
“Anyone who runs whether competitively or recreationally will benefit from this class,” he said. “Our goal is to provide education so that people learn how to run the right way.”
Henry Mayo Fitness and Health is a full-service fitness and training facility offering the most advanced equipment and professional athletic training services available.
