The Benefits of Dance

by | Feb 21, 2017 | Kids Activities

Since the beginning of time, song and movement have brought people together. Dance is a creative outlet that allows us to express ourselves in a way no other outlet can. It brings people together no matter where they are from, what they look like, or what they believe in. This applies to all forms of dance, including ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, or street dance. Dance is typically placed in the category of a form of entertainment but what people need to know is that it is also a method of relaxation, healing, self-expression and so much more.
Moving to music is therapeutic, it reduces stress and anxiety levels and increases serotonin levels. In other words, dance makes us happy. Listening to music and moving our bodies in the way that the music makes us feel, allowing the music to guide us, provides us with a sense of empowerment, puts our minds at ease, and gives us a way to express ourselves without words. Even just watching dancers perform can have the same effect. Like we, here at New World Dance, always tell our students, “Dance it off!”
In addition, dance improves motor development, balance, strength, muscle memory, and coordination, and promotes physical fitness and exercise. Dancers also develop life skills, such as perseverance, discipline, and creativity. All in all, dance is an effective and beneficial platform for self-expression and overall emotional and physical well-being, providing us with a body-based connection to our surroundings. We often hear people say, “I don’t dance.” Everyone should dance. Even if you only dance when no one else is around, you should dance. Turn on the music, listen, feel, and then move. There is nothing else like it.
