Improving Your Home
Every homeowner has aspirations and ideas to improve their home, bathroom, kitchen, yard, patio, etc. Ideas are everywhere! Magazines, neighbor’s homes, television, the vacation you took; continuously building up in your mind. Eventually it all gets convoluted and you may find you’re more confused than when you started. What to do? Here are three tips that will help you sort it all out, get you on your way, and potentially save you thousands in the end:
Gather Ideas: Clip pictures, write down thoughts, and maybe try to sketch a thing or two. Exhaust this as much as possible, think about and consider all of them. Then begin to organize them in some manner like least to most favorite. This will help calm the buzz in your head and help you move on to the next phase, design. Trying new ideas in the middle of construction and making changes can get costly.
Finalize a Design: When you finalize your design consider all aspects of your home. The architecture style, the surrounding environment, orientation, and you! After all it should be an expression of you. Consider the entire project- This is where you pretend everything you want is getting done, that way you see the immediate and long term phases of the project. Although you may not be doing everything you want due to budget constraints you can plan for it. You may not be dropping in that resort-like pool you always dreamed about, but incorporate it into the design to set up an easier install in the future. It may take something very simple and inexpensive now; there’s is nothing worse than ripping something out that cost you money and paying to have it thrown away. Don’t trip on dollars to save cents.
Select Materials Wisely: They vary in cost, color, style, and installation cost. Understand how they are applied or installed. Selecting the right materials can avoid many headaches and save you money during construction, it may seem easy to swap out natural wood floors for tile, but if the surface base has been prepared a certain way or to a specific height it can cost you thousands to modify.
The best suggestion is finding a licensed contractor who can help with all these matters. There’s not many out there, but they exist. An architect or designer may not be necessary for the scope of your project and can cost you thousands. Get a few estimates, inquire about their background; ask for pictures, references, and a design. Compare their previous designs to the actual finished product, which will be a good indicator if they can bring your ideas to life. Ideally a “one stop shop” that can provide vision, design, and creation will be best for your project and light on your wallet.
