Soroptimist International of Valencia: New Name, New Board, Same Dedication
When Suzanne Stone opened the first meeting for her second term as president, she also opened the first meeting of Soroptimist International of Valencia (SIV), formerly Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley. Suzanne stated, “After 42 ½ years of empowering women and girls, we felt that it was time to rebrand, refresh and revitalize our commitment and our spirit”. Joining Suzanne Stone on the SIV Board for 2017-2018 include Stephanie Sewell (President-Elect), Kathy Rutherford (Vice-President), Linda Hagen-Stewart (Treasurer), Karen Spencer (Treasurer-Elect), Chrissy Gonzales (Secretary) and Sandy Mintz (Corresponding Secretary). Elsa Spitzer (Membership Director), Cara Spiropoulos (Public Awareness), Denise Dacorsi-Placencio (Parliamentarian), and Amanda Etcheverry (Immediate Past President) will also serve on this year’s Board. Since 1974, SIV has been empowering the girls and women of the community through its two major programs, Live Your Dream and Dream It Be It. Live Your Dream provides cash grants to disadvantaged women who may use the money to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain a higher education. Focusing on girls in secondary school, Dream It Be It provides them with access to professional role models, career education and the resources to live their dreams.
As a non-profit, SIV strives to reach its goals through fundraising events. This year, in addition to the long standing fundraisers Bras for a Cause and Gentlemen for a Cause, SIV has added two more: On August 1, a night of wine tasting and fun at Summer Wine Down; on August 19, Bunco Night, a time to eat, drink and laugh with old and new friends. (And win some fun prizes with the roll of the dice.) The 14th Annual Bras for a Cause “BRASsiere de Valencia” will be held on Sunday, September 24, at the Valencia Country Club. This popular event has sold out for the last three years. A portion of all funds raised will minimize costs and ensure revenues for the fight against breast cancer. Last year SIV provided help to women at Sheila R. Veloz with 83 procedures, 36 mammograms, 9 biopsies, and 38 ultrasounds and helped Circle of Hope, Inc. with 4 women needing assistance. Tickets and sponsorships are available on www.sivalencia.org. “With continued support and generosity of the Santa Clarita community for Bras for a Cause and other programs and events, we hope that we can be as successful under our new name as with our old,” commented Denise Dacorsi-Placencio, chairperson for BRASsiere de Valencia. The 6th annual Gentlemen for a Cause will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at Tournament Players Club. The majority of the funds raised will be used to support SIV Dream programs which help women and girls in our community. “This fun and entertaining event allows us to highlight some of our community’s most talented gentlemen and raise money for a great cause” said Stephanie Sewell, chairperson for Gentlemen for a Cause. Soroptimist International of Valencia is part of Soroptimist International, a worldwide organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.
