World Police & Fire Games Cycling Summary
The World Police Fire Games (WPFG) are coming to Los Angeles and seven cycling races are coming to the Santa Clarita Valley. The WPFG’s Cycling Coordinators have been working diligently to present a world class production for police and fire cycling enthusiasts from 60 foreign countries. All of the cycling venues for the 2017 WPFG will be held in the hills of the City of Santa Clarita. There will be cycling races seven days in a row from August 6 through August 12, 2017.
Starting on Sunday August 6, the Criterium race will be held in the Valencia Industrial Park. With its perfectly paved roads and natural course loop, it makes the perfect location for the Criterium race.
On Monday August 7, the Hill Climb Race will take place just a few miles north of the Criterium location. This will be a race against the clock as a rider is sent every 30 seconds to attack the 2.7 mile climb, up a nicely paved road at an average grade of 6.7%. There will be plenty of time to come out and lay down your best effort and still make it to the Colosseum for the Opening Ceremonies that afternoon!
On Tuesday, August 8, there will be a very scenic Out and Back 10 mile Time Trial that you will not want to miss, out in the hills of Acton. But don’t worry….this is actually a fairly flat section for the race.
On Wednesday August 9, is the infamous 32 mile Acton Road Race. This is an extremely popular area for cyclists just north of Santa Clarita, with approximately 2,500 feet of climbing. Everyone will love this course and expect a neutral feed zone at about 20 miles
Thursday, August 10, will be a fairly easy day with the Sprint Race, this will be held on the grounds of Six Flags Magic Mountain. A super fun and exciting event where you will line up with other competitors in your age group, and go all out for 400 yards. Plan on at least three sprints to decide the medal winners for your age group! After your race, take advantage of the free parking and spend the rest of the day exploring the many rides in the Park at Magic Mountain. Discounted park tickets are available on the WPFG website.
Time to switch gears on Friday, August 11, and tackle the MTB Cross Country race at the Castaic Recreation Center. This will be a 4 lap course consisting of approximately 4.3 miles per lap with roughly 300 feet of climbing per lap. This is a very rider friendly course of approximately 17.2 total miles made up of single track and plenty of fire roads for passing.
We wind down the week of cycling on Saturday, August 12, with the Cyclocross race to be held in the Santa Clarita City Park. This will be a fun and challenging event, complete with obstacles and all the goodies that a true Cross race has to offer. Mountain bikes will be permitted to race!
Awards for all of the cycling events will be held at the venue immediately following the races. Hope to see you there!
