Back to School Time
Single Mothers Outreach (SMO) has an annual Back-to-School event where kids are given backpacks filled with all the supplies they may need to have a successful school year. Earlier this year as SMO began planning the event, they were unsure if the proper resources would be available to fund the event.
In early June, Cindy Biehahn of the women’s organization (Relief Society) for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, reached out to SMO looking for service opportunities. SMO mentioned the Back-to-School event and Cindy jumped on board. “As women, we are busy and not always able to provide the gift of time, so donating the backpacks and supplies to Single Mother’s Outreach was an easy way to serve,” said Cindy Biehahn, Relief Society president.
Within a few weeks’ time, the women had collected nearly 260 backpacks and all kinds of supplies. Volunteers arrived at the office a few days before the event to fill the backpacks and help prepare for the event.
On July 29th, SMO kids arrived at the Savia Community Center eager to pick out the backpack they would sport this upcoming school year. The ladies from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints were once again there willing to support SMO during the event.
“As Christians, it’s our desire to live like Jesus Christ, who lived a life of service. This was a chance to come together in a unified display of love, support and service, which is one of the purposes of the Relief Society (women’s organization),” said Biehahn.
Due to this incredibly generous donation, children at SMO have been able to benefit from school supplies they may not otherwise be able to afford. SMO is thankful for all the generous donors who have helped serve the community well.
