VIA Throws the Ultimate Party Paying Tribute to the Hollywood Canteen

by | Aug 31, 2017 | Community

The Valley Industry Association will host the VIA BASH on Friday, October 27, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency Valencia. Known for its themed galas and top entertainment, VIA delivers one of the community’s most sought after events.
The theme this year is Hollywood Canteen – a return to a time when “the greatest generation danced with the most beautiful girls in the world.” It was a club located on Cahuenga Blvd. in the heart of Hollywood — between October 1942 and Thanksgiving Day in 1945 — that offered food, dancing and entertainment for servicemen, usually on their way overseas.
What made the canteen spectacular were the hundreds of stars who volunteered their services at the canteen — everything from serving snacks to dancing as partners on the floor. Celebrities such as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Spencer Tracy, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Cary Grant, Irene Manning, Mickey Rooney, Linda Darnell, Claire James, John Garfield, Merle Oberon, Hedda Hopper, Mary Gordon, Dinah Shore, Jess Parker, Red Skelton, Paulette Goddard, Joan Leslie were but a few who tirelessly volunteered their time at the Hollywood Canteen.
Under the financial leadership of Jules Stein, materials for repairs and decorations, and actual labor were donated by members of the 14 guilds and unions of the industry. Artists and cartoonists painted murals on the walls. It was a labor of love by all those involved.
Showcasing business and industry
As part of the evening’s festivities, VIA honors and showcases businesses within Santa Clarita by celebrating the diversity and accomplishments of its members. Awards are given to those individuals and members of distinction deserving in one of three categories: Business of the Year, Rising Star, and the Connie Worden-Roberts Volunteer of the Year Award.
Workforce readiness key to student success
Everyone’s invited to help support the VIA Education Foundation’s privately-funded Connecting to Success program offering important workplace readiness skills to high school students. This signature program now trains more than 2,500 high school juniors annually from all area high schools.
“To see young students that are about to step into the business world and other professions be so prepared and excited, and to see where many of them are in their lives as juniors in high school, I always come away so impressed and inspired by how great our community is doing in terms of these young people,” VIA Chairman of the Board Ed Masterson commented.
Befitting the event theme, readers can purchase gold star sponsorships starting at $25 each, which helps send students to the program. In Hollywood Canteen fashion, donors will be recognized at the VIA BASH as one-star ($25 donation) up to five-star Generals ($125 donation or more).
