A Christmas Story

This Christmas Season, the Canyon Theatre Guild will bring to life the antics of nine-year old, Ralphie Parker, in his quest to obtain the only present Ralphie wanted — a Red Ryder BB Gun. This iconic tale, A Christmas Story, written by Jean Sheppard, has a nostalgic quality and is guaranteed, according to Director Barry Agin, to make you remember your own holidays and ones yet to come! The whole story has a very comedic but tender outlook.
Set in a small town in Indiana in the 1940s, many obstacles stand in the way of Ralphie, played by Lucas Francke, in getting his perfect Christmas present. His mother, teacher, and even Old Saint Nick do not think it’s such a great idea saying that Ralphie just “might shoot his eye out”. But Ralphie who fears that he will not get his Christmas present will go through great lengths to prove that this BB gun will be the best Christmas present ever! A questionable leg lamp, a testy department store Santa, horrendous pink bunny pajamas, and a triple-dog dare to lick an icy cold flagpole are just some of the obstacles which will bring you sheer comedic relief.
Although neither Barry Agin nor Lucas Francke nor Tim McGowan, who plays the old man, ever wanted a Red Ryder BB Gun, all three of them well remember the lengths each have and are still going through to get the Christmas present of their dreams. With a twinkle in his eye, Francke, who is making his stage debut, vividly detailed his own pleas to convince his parents not too long ago to buy him an IPod. But Francke confesses, he never went to the extreme that Ralphie did…or did he?
According to Tim McGowan, The Christmas Story has a wholesome Christmas message that we can always relate to and need more than ever in modern times. It’s about family and the chance to share laughter with each other and not simply about getting and receiving gifts. The Christmas Story is guaranteed to bring your family together for the holidays, and according to Francke, it’s a lot of fun too.
So, will Ralphie get his BB gun on Christmas morning? Come find out! A Christmas Story will be playing at The Canyon Theatre Guild in Old Town Newhall from November 24th-December 23rd.
