Gift With Purchase
As an Assistance League© Santa Clarita volunteer, I not only enjoy the privilege of working in our community at the Resale store, but I get the opportunity to shop at our store before or after my shifts and on my days off! One of the departments that I find absolutely irresistible is the book department.
Recently, I was delighted to find a book by one of my favorite entertainers, Carol Burnett. Seeing her face on the cover brought back fond childhood memories of gathering together as a family in our basement in Eastern Canada. We would eat popcorn and laugh uproariously at the gang from this popular variety show. So, I knew immediately it was a book that I wanted to read. I got home and curled up in my favorite reading chair and opened the book. To my surprise, out fluttered two folded pieces of paper. Upon closer examination, I realized that they were newspaper articles about Carol Burnett from two different periodicals, written a few years apart and carefully cut out and stapled together. As I held the book in my left hand and the articles in my right, I found myself smiling and felt a rush of gratitude and a deep sense of connection. Someone else out there loved and appreciated Carol and her cast enough not only to purchase her book and pass it along for another fan, but also to have discovered these articles and to know that the next owner of this book would enjoy them as well. How extraordinarily thoughtful! I felt as though I had received a “Gift with Purchase.” I’ve heard that this is not an uncommon feeling among our resale store shoppers. You just never know what you might find there on a given day. It’s all part of the joy of discovery! Speaking of the joy of discovery, as I turned to the first page of Carol’s book, I read a moving quote by her daughter, Carrie Louise Hamilton. It read, “Our legacy is really the lives we touch, the inspiration we give, altering someone’s plan-if even for a moment-and getting them to think, rage, cry, laugh, argue…Walk around the block dazed…More than anything, we are remembered for our smiles; the ones we share with our closest and dearest, and the ones we bestow on a total stranger, who needed it right then, and God put you there to deliver.”
I am thankful for the smile that I received that day thanks to the book donor and for the smiles that all of our donors, shoppers, community partners and volunteers bring through their generosity in supporting the efforts of Assistance League Santa Clarita.
