What is a Good Breakfast?

by | Jan 22, 2018 | Health & Fitness

According to the companies that market your favorite boxed-breakfast, we should have a glass of orange juice, a bowl of cereal/oatmeal and a side of fruit. Super awesome if you are an endurance athlete and have an ideal waistline. Not so much, if you are like most Americans and struggle with having fat on your body.
Now, let’s imagine that your body is a factory and your metabolism is the foreman. Got the visual? Now, when you sleep, your glycemic index (the rate at which carbs are converted to blood sugar) is at its highest, because your activity level is at its lowest. So if you eat that traditional breakfast loaded with carbs, your foreman says “the furnace is off, store those carbs in the butt, belly, thighs, arms and so on.
Now give that same body carbs after some activity and the foreman says “throw it the furnace, we’re burning energy now.”
That’s right, I am clearly telling anyone who wants to lose fat to limit or eliminate carbs for breakfast. If you want to “ignite” your metabolism at breakfast, eat proteins and fats. My favorite breakfast is an omelet with chicken and either spinach or broccoli. Eggs are superfoods that have been given a bad reputation by the nutritionist of yesteryears. The American Heart Association suggests that an egg daily will have no adverse effect to your cholesterol.
Some traditional (old school) trainers, nutritionist and even doctors will disagree with me on these points. So, allow me first to address the potential critics.
Most Doctors judge your weight on the criteria of a Body Mass Index (BMI) Chart. You know the chart, it’s the one that tells you how much you should weigh based on only your height and gender. With this information, how could we subscribe to the belief that we should all weigh the same based off of our height and gender?
With that being said; if you want to lose fat, don’t give your body carbs for breakfast which will only convert to fat.
