Zonta to Honor Volunteers at Women in Service Brunch
When Zonta Club of SCV hosts its annual Women in Service Brunch Saturday, March 24, at the Valencia Hyatt, it will be the 34th consecutive year the club has honored local women who have made significant contributions to advancing the status of women through volunteer service and leadership.
Local non-profit organizations have been invited to nominate their outstanding women volunteers, who will be guests of Zonta at the event. Zonta’s Women in Service Committee will select the top volunteer from all the nominees to receive the Carmen Sarro Women in Service Award at the close of the event.
The brunch started as the club’s annual Status of Women program 34 years ago. Some five years ago, the club changed the name to Women in Service to better reflect a tradition of honoring local women who serve the community through outstanding volunteerism and leadership.
The top award is named the Carmen Sarro Women in Service Award in honor of longtime Zonta member Carmen Sarro, who died in 2003. During her life, Sarro was honored for her dedication to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Canyon Theatre Guild, Boys and Girls Club, and the City of Santa Clarita. In 1985, Sarro was selected as Woman of the Year. She was a charter member of the local Zonta Club and remained active for more than 25 years. During that time, she served as president two times, led the area clubs as area director, and served the district as secretary.
“We are now designating this top award as the Carmen Sarro Award, not just to remember her service to Zonta.” says Judy Penman, president of the local Zonta Club. “We wanted to honor Carmen in a way that recognizes the scope of her service to the entire community. She became an icon for the kind of service that we Zontians seek to emulate as a part of our mission.”
Honorees are guests of Zonta at the brunch, but members of their nominating organizations, family and friends are welcome to attend to support their nominee. The $45 ticket includes a gourmet buffet brunch and a boutique with 14 unique vendors. Zonta also will be offering tickets to its May 3 Lunafest women’s film festival.
Women in Service tickets are $45 per person if postmarked before March 5, and $50 from March 6 until reservations close March 12. Payment can be made online at www.scvzonta.org, or a check payable to Zonta Club of SCV Foundation can be mailed to 27722 Sutters Pointe Dr., Santa Clarita, CA 91350.
