Mother, You Make My Heart Smile
It is a true honor to be called on to write this article for Mother’s Day. Each year we set aside a time to honor mothers with cards, gifts, words and a general outpouring of our love and appreciation. At my church we celebrate with a Mother’s Day Tea to honor all mothers. The men in the congregation also bless the mothers with a delicious breakfast on Mother’s Day and a gift to commemorate the occasion.
I thank the Lord in His infinite wisdom for giving me my mother. As I look back over my life, I am amazed at the depth of love and caring exhibited by one person on behalf of another. I thank my mother for her sacrifices, her wisdom and most importantly her unwavering faith in GOD. She relied each day on the prompting of the Spirit within and told us many stories of how her listening to Him kept her from disaster and other unforeseen circumstances. At age 87, my mother is still relying on His Spirit and He still guides and directs her daily.
My mother is the most generous woman I know. She has always lived by and instilled in her children, the golden rule “do unto others as you would have them to do unto you.’ With this philosophy guiding her every move, our doors were always open to anyone in need. She willingly shared whatever she had without expecting anything in return.
My mother is and has always been very fashionable. Her hats and gloves and jewelry were always a fascination for me. Everything was coordinated. Makeup was applied perfectly, not too much, not too little. Every Sunday my mother would dress in her best outfits and take herself to church. I asked her once why she took so much time dressing for church and she responded, “The Lord likes it when His kids dress up for Him.”
All mothers are different but as I look back on my life, I can only say that I am blessed to have the perfect mother for me. My mother encouraged me, supported me, and admonished me when I needed it, protected me and most importantly showed me how important it is to have a relationship with the Lord, Jesus Christ. Thank you, mother, thinking of you makes my heart smile.
