My Journey to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

by | May 25, 2018 | With Your Family in Mind

They say it is not preventable, nor curable. But are they wrong? I watched my grandfather suffer from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, and experienced first-hand the devastation to my family. I walked through an eight-year Alzheimer’s journey with my mother, and mere words cannot explain the pain.
In 2017, Dr. Dale Bredesen published his book “The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse the Cognitive Decline of Dementia”. It became a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. Doctors flocked to Dr. Bredesen for training in Alzheimer’s prevention. People, in record numbers, contacted his clinic to become patients. The world is looking for answers to prevent Alzheimer’s and reverse early stages of cognitive decline. What can we do now to prevent Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other brain diseases in the future?
I read Dr. Bredesen’s book, plus other books and publications by other doctors, and even books published by a brilliant software engineer turned brain researcher. Their conclusions are the same. There certainly appears to be real steps for Alzheimer’s prevention – and I believe we now have some answers.
After reading many newly published books detailing the recent science, I researched doctors who are certified in Dr. Bredesen’s methods – which is called “ReCODE” which stands for Reversal of Cognitive Decline. I chose a “Bredesen-certified” southern California doctor, and began the process. He performed a complete physical examination, analyzed hormone levels, and ordered cognitive testing (no problems there). Lifestyle, sleep patterns, stress, exercise and other factors were discussed and reviewed. Genetic testing was performed. My blood was analyzed extensively and compared with the optional “markers” recommended by Dr. Bredesen. My diet was changed dramatically, and a specialized vitamin/mineral/herb regime was prescribed. I now eat grass fed beef, and “good fats” which feed the brain. I minimize sugars, gluten and carbohydrates, which can cause harm. Processed foods have also been eliminated from my diet. There have been several other changes taken upon the recommendation of my new “Alzheimer’s Prevention” doctor, which I have implemented.
This was not covered by medical insurance, but the investment in my brain health is invaluable. I feel like I am on the right road, and I understand the many factors contributing toward Alzheimer’s, and what I can do now to prevent this dreaded disease. Everyone must understand that there is no pill or prescription that can, or ever will, cure this disease. It is a combination of many factors that translate into a brain in distress, causing damage and cognitive decline. We must, as individuals and as a society, protect, preserve, and strengthen our brains.
