Santa Clarita Ballet’s Production of Coppelia Presents the Perfect Way to Start Off Your Summer
The great comedy ballet, performed by major companies all over the world since its debut in the late nineteenth century, comes to the community June 9 at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Centre at College of the Canyons. Coppelia has withheld the test of time with its eccentric and hilarious storyline, Leo Delibes’ gorgeous musical score, and its focus on two things that never change: love and misunderstandings.
The ballet begins with the engagement of Swanilda and Franz, but before they can get their happy ending, Franz begins to flirt with a beautiful girl on a balcony. Unbeknownst to Franz, the girl on the balcony is actually a doll, Coppelia, created by the peculiar Dr. Coppelius. In a fit of jealousy and betrayal, Swanilda and her group of friends attempt to confront Coppelia by sneaking into Dr. Coppelius’s workroom. Unfortunately, Franz has the same idea, and chaos ensues. The role of Swanilda is danced by West Ranch senior Erica Gillespie, who has danced with the company for thirteen years. Professional dancer, Raydel Caceres, joins the cast this year as Swanilda’s fiance, Franz. Also featured in some of the ballet’s most exciting variations are company members Emily Anderson, Julia Dunne, and Brooke Stanke.
Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to see Coppelia produced on a professional level right here in Santa Clarita!
