Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley Improving the Lives of Women through Service, Advocacy and Awareness. – June 2018
The Santa Clarita Valley takes pride in a community of non-profit organizations working for the good of others and the many volunteers who give of their time and talents to support the philanthropic activities of those organizations. Santa Clarita Man and Woman of the Year awards recognize individuals who are volunteers extraordinaire with the first Man of the Year award in 1964 – followed by recognition of the first Woman of the Year in 1970. Since 1975, sixteen Zontians have joined the ranks of the celebrated Woman of the Year.
Zontian Gloria Mercado-Fortine was named 2018 Woman of the Year on May 11th for her countless hours of active volunteering and giving to the community. Since 1995 she has shared her leadership expertise as Governing Board member of Hart High School District and Castaic Union School District; Board Member of Providence Health System, City of Santa Clarita Anti-Gang Task Force member plus countless volunteer leadership and fundraising activities such as the SCV Boys and Girls Club, Child & family Center, SCV Cancer Society, etc., to name a few.
The 15 other Zontians recognized as Woman of the Year for contributions and making a difference in Santa Clarita Valley are: Connie Wordon-Roberts -1975; Barbara Cochran – 1983; Jo Ann Darcy -1984; Carmen Sarro-1985; Mary Spring – 1986; Jamie Kennedy- 1989; Ruth Clark – 1991; Pat Allen- 1994; Pat Warford – 1997; Pat Willett – 1999; Betty Seldner – 2000; Adele MacPherson – 2002; Judy Penman – 2008; Cheryl Gray-2014; and Lois Bauccio-2016. Zontians, we are proud of you for your contributions to the community at large!
This list represents untold hours of volunteerism that shows the giving hearts of Zontians, their caring about others and efforts to make a difference for residents in our community.
