Message from the City Manager Ken Striplin – August 2018

by | Jul 25, 2018 | Community

A lot has changed in our City since the 1970s, including a population jump from around 60,000 to nearly four times that, and the move to becoming our own City. As a result, we have built parks, roads, amenities and preserved thousands of acres of open space, to name a few of many accomplishments. However, one piece that has not changed is the facility that houses the hard-working men and women of our Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station – a concrete building that stands adjacent to the Valencia Library and Court House. This building opened 46 years ago, and our public safety partners have long since outgrown the space.
I am thrilled to say that change is coming in the form of a 46,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art, centrally located, brand new Sheriff’s Station. We recently broke ground at the site on Golden Valley Road, between Centre Pointe Parkway and Robert C. Lee Parkway. This new facility, which is a joint project with Los Angeles County, will offer the space and resources necessary for our deputies, detectives and other station staff to protect and serve the Santa Clarita community now, and into the future.
The new Sheriff’s Station will feature a 4,000-square-foot vehicle maintenance facility for on-site vehicle repairs, a heliport, 9-1-1 dispatch center, jail and enough space to house all of the resources needed to provide public safety in Santa Clarita. With a price tag of over $62 million, this is the most expensive project the City has taken on. Grading is now underway at the site, and we expect the new facility to be in operation by the end of 2020.
While we look forward to our Sheriff’s Station becoming a reality, we are encouraging all of you to do your part to prevent unnecessary thefts. By now you have seen the advertisements for the Stolen Collection either online, in magazines or at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. There has been much buzz about what the ads mean. With men dressed in black posing with high-end handbags and luxury items, you may think the ads are promoting a new boutique coming to town. In actuality, the campaign’s goal is to encourage you to protect your own valuables. Often people who are victims of theft find themselves in that position because they forget to lock their doors, did not roll up car windows or left valuables in plain sight.
Fortunately, our City is continuously placed on the top of safest cities lists by a variety of organizations. Just recently, Reviews.org ranked Santa Clarita as one of the top 10 cities nationwide, with the least property crime, based on FBI statistics. Together, we can keep Santa Clarita the safe community that we all love to call home.
