An Exciting Time for Alzheimer’s Prevention Research

by | Aug 29, 2018 | With Your Family in Mind

Due to my family history, I consult with a physician who is “Bredesen-certified”, meaning he is trained in Alzheimer’s prevention methods, based on the newest research by such medical leaders as Dr. David Perlmutter and Dr. Dale Bredesen (both now bestselling authors). There is a very strong movement in our country, where people take charge of their brain health. They reject the old-school attitude of “there is nothing you can do about Alzheimer’s disease”. The movement includes people like me, who are reading the research, hearing the success stories, and understanding that this disease is not an “overnight” event, nor solved by a miracle “pill”. Rather, this insidious and evil disease is the result of years of subtle and slow brain deterioration, until finally symptoms develop. Numerous medical researchers and physicians are showing us ways to nourish and strengthen our brains, so our brains continue to work well into our old age.
A very good and easy to read book titled “the Alzheimer’s Antidote” by Amy Berger, was recently published. It provides an excellent overview in an understandable format of the most recent important Alzheimer’s prevention information. The information contained is a “shortened version” of the numerous other more recently published technical books on the subject.
As part of my prevention program, I have eliminated processed foods, lowered carbohydrates, and avoid added sugars. I am taking supplements based on the recommendation of my physician, after an extensive examination. This supplementation includes:
• Curcumin (1000 mg)
• Vitamin E 90iu with mixed tocopherols
• Multiple vitamin with Mega B’s
• Vitamin B12 5000mcg
• CoQ10 300 mg
• Vitamin D3 5000iu
• Omega 3 1000mg
• XCT Oil (an enhanced Coconut Oil which nourishes the brain)
There are other supplements, amino acids, and herbs that are recommended if the patient is symptomatic. Otherwise, these vitamins are simply preventative measures. Interestingly, my doctor puts coconut oil in his coffee in the morning. I put XCT oil (medium chain triglyceride oil) and grass-fed Ghee butter in mine (look up the brain benefits of “Bulletproof coffee”), which is to provide the necessary “good fats” our brains thrive on.
More and more people are understanding the need for a proactive approach to keep our brains from decline. People are getting to the root cause of dementia and Alzheimer’s, rather than only seeking medication to treat the symptoms. They are working with health coaches, functional medicine providers, and Bredesen-certified physicians. The tide is turning for the better, and our nation is now taking important steps toward better health.
