Kalakeke Pacific Island Dance Company – September 2018

Kalakeke Pacific Island Dance Company recently represented Santa Clarita this past weekend during a Tahitian dance competition on the island of Kaua’i! In this competition, known as Heiva I Kaua’I, Kalakeke brought over 20 competitors to compete in the categories of solos (where an individual dancer will compete against other dancers in impromptu dancing to different types of beats), Aparima (a group dance to Tahitian songs) and Ote’a (a group dance to drums as well as Tahitian songs). Kalakeke was one of the two groups to represent the mainland at this competition, which took place over two days with the solo portion of the competition having taken place on Saturday and the Aparima and Ote’a portions on Sunday. Kalakeke not only took more than 20 dancers to this competition, they brought their own musicians and vocalist to perform all of the music live. All of the costumes made for the competition were also made with fresh flowers and greenery by each of the dancers participating as well as their families. Thanks to all of their efforts, Kalakeke was able to take two awards in the solo portion (3rd Place in 13-15 Girls and 2nd Place in 40+ Men) and 3rd place in both Aparima and Ote’a. Congratulations to Kalakeke for representing Santa Clarita in the art of Polynesian dance!
