Make a Blanket Day for Project Linus Join us on September 22 at Golden Valley High School

by | Aug 30, 2018 | Community

Mark your calendar on September 22 and join us at Golden Valley High School from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the gym where community members come together to make blankets for critically ill and traumatized children in our service area.
The local chapter began just six years ago after English teacher Sharon Garvar received a blanket for her newborn in the NICU.  The gesture of someone spending weeks or even months making a blanket for a child he/she would never meet made her cry in gratitude.  To repay the act of kindness, Sharon started making blankets, and shortly after telling her AOC students about Project Linus, 90 students stepped up to help her make 110 blankets in three months. Today, there are Project Linus clubs at Rio Norte Junior High, as well as Hart and Valencia High Schools as well as Hart @ Home.
“The past six years have been amazing because I’ve been able to watch the chapter grow from just a group of students at AOC working to make a difference in their community, to seeing the entire Santa Clarita Valley come together to comfort not only their own children in need, but children in other communities.  We now have schools in Antelope Valley starting to join in and make blankets as part of their school programs and our community events are drawing larger crowds each time which allows us to comfort more kids.  As a result, we have donated out over 8,500 blankets in such a short time,” said Sharon.
Project Linus is a volunteer non-profit organization with a two-fold mission.
First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children in need who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”
Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.
The mission of the Santa Clarita Valley/Antelope Valley/Sylmar Chapter of Project Linus is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade, washable blankets and afghans lovingly crafted by volunteer blanketeers.
