A reflection on our communities past month’s achievements, community developments, and awesomeness

Nola Aronson Is A Philanthropic Superstar

If giving back to the community were an Olympic sport than Nola Aronson’s Advanced Audiology would be taking home gold medals…. This past month, Nola Aronson sponsored four community events within 30 days! Nola has been a long time resident and business owner here in tahe Santa Clarita Valley and has been giving more than just the ability to hear. She and her team have taken on a role to be more involved in the community. And that they did! Nola sponsored Circle of Hope’s Vine to Wine, Santa Clarita Valley’s Senior Center’s Motown in Town Fundraiser, SCV’s Dancing With Our Stars, and the Latino Business Alliance Hispanic Heritage and Awards Gala, “We Are One” where, for her philanthropic efforts, Nola was awarded the Special Achievement Award.

The City Awarded for Natural Gas Savings

The City of Santa Clarita received the Beacon Spotlight Award from the Institute for Local Government for our natural gas savings. Our city reached 11 percent in gas savings over the past year. The Beacon Spotlight Awards are given in five categories: Community Greenhouse Gas Reductions, Agency Greenhouse Gas Reductions, Natural Gas Savings, Agency Energy Savings (Santa Clarita won in 2012-13) and Sustainability Best Practices (Santa Clarita Won in 2013 and 2016). On behalf of the City of Santa Clarita, Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean accepted the award at the Annual Conference and Expo put on by the League of California Cities in Long Beach. This program recognizes local governments for their actions in energy efficiency and conservation along with their efforts to reduce greenhouse gases. Mayor Pro Tem McLean was happy to share…”our residents and the environment that surrounds us is a top priority in Santa Clarita.”

Cocktails on the Roof Raises $40,000

Last month the WiSH Education Foundation held its fourth annual “Cocktails on the Roof” event and raised $40,000 for the William S. Hart Union High School District art programs. This year’s funds raised were the largest yet and there were even more booths this year than last. Many of our favorite local restaurants and bars came out to provide a night of delicious fun! All the attendees tried some of the best food, cocktails, wine and beer in the Santa Clarita Valley and then got the chance to dance the night away with entertainment provided by SOS Entertainment. If you did not get a chance to join the fun this year, we will see you next year on the roof!

Suicide Prevention for First Responders

Last month the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors discussed suicide, an ever-growing issue in the first responder and emergency personnel community. County Supervisors discussed a motion to review suicide prevention policies and services offered to first responders and emergency personnel. This community is exposed to traumatic situations almost daily. Statics, from the Ruderman Family Foundation,
showed that in 2017 the amount of number of firefighters and law enforcement officers that committed suicides, outnumbered all the line-of-duty deaths. This report also discussed the issue that not enough agencies offer programs or have policies in place to combat suicide. Over the next 90 days the County Supervisors will collaborate on a comprehensive plan to address mental health issues in this community.

Students Create Project to Benefit LGBTQ

Two high school students: Kayla Tomlin, a senior at West Ranch; and Cassidy Bensko, a sophomore at Valencia High School came together and provided a night of painting. Inspired by painter and television host Bob Ross, they created The Bob Ross Project, a national endeavor to combat LGBTQ suicides. The teens were inspired by his calm and soothing presence. Kayla and Cassidy took action because they share in the struggles and stress of being a student and teenager. The project was constructed to give attendees a distressing environment that is competition-free. All proceeds were donated to the Trevor Project, an organization that offers in-person and online resources for crisis intervention and suicide prevention.

All Sheriff’s Wear Pink

Through an effort to support breast cancer awareness the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Department wore pink patches on their uniform with The Pink Patch Project. Our men and women in the khaki suits added a touch of color to aide in the fight against breast cancer and supporting research organizations dedicated to finding a cure for this horrific disease. Started back in 2015 the bright pink patch has grown and now reaches the 300 agencies that make up the Los Angeles County Police Chief’s Association and public safety agencies. Our boys and girls in uniform will wear this patch until November. This commemorative patch is on sale for $10 each.

Hart High School Students Organized a
9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

50 high school students at William S. Hart High School came together in a remembrance ceremony for the many lives we lost on 9/11. A lot of the students really did not remember first-hand accounts of this horrific day but still wanted to keep the memories of the ones we lost alive by placing a small flag for each life lost. They also wanted to honor the men and women lost in the wars that followed the attacks and the brave souls in the United States Armed Forces that were lost on the day. Public officials came out to join in the ceremony.

Edison Installs Weather Stations

Southern California Edison installed weather stations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. These new stations are an effort to predict high-risk fire conditions. A spokesperson shared that the purpose of these stations give Edison weather information. Thus far, eight stations were placed in Canyon Country, Valencia and Castaic in high risk areas. The stations were placed on utility poles and are equipped with sensors to provide real-time weather information. The information taken from these stations are then sent to weather modeling software to forecast high fire risk. Southern California Edison will put up a total of 125 stations across their service territories.

COC Chancellor Celebrates 30 Years

Dr. Dianne Van Hook has served as Chancellor for College of the Canyons for 30 years. Throughout her service, she has played an instrumental role in furthering educational resources and platforms for the Santa Clarita Valley and Beyond. She has been the longest serving COC Chancellor. A ceremony was held in her honor last month and as part of the ceremony the Board of Trustees announced a passage to the main road on the Canyon Country Campus in her honor.

Fishing Contest Held at Castaic Lake

The Catch a Special Thrill (C.A.S.T) for Kids Foundation announced they will be hosting a fishing event for children at Castaic Lake. C.A.S.T is a national non-profit organization that pairs with other organizations, local governments and businesses to bring the joy of fishing to disabled or disadvantaged children everywhere. The team of agencies and organizations for this event include: Santa Clarita Valley Water, Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation – Castaic Lake, Friends of Castaic Lake, Castaic Lions Club and several others. This year, the organization has brought in 75 volunteers to service 45 children in our community to learn the relaxing pastime of fishing along with learning about boating safety, angler ethics, and environmental and natural resources. Each child is paired with a volunteer boater and will go out and learn about fishing for a couple of hours on October 6.
