Myths about Addiction

 For decades addiction towards psychoactive substances or chemical dependency was considered to be a moral issue in modern American society. Social stigma towards the disease of addiction prevented scientific and medical community from rigorous research and clinically based solutions.
Part of human nature is the innate unconscious tendency to escape the reality and to alter consciousness.
Most families whose loved ones struggle in addiction ask a common question, “Why, what made them make a wrong choice?’’ And the answer is very simple: human curiosity and nature to alter the reality. Of course, there are much more underlying issues and phenomena that come on top to complete the choice. However; once they make the wrong choice they are opening doors to the world of addiction and a devastating disease of brain chemistry.
Unfortunately, it takes years for one to “hit the bottom” and learn from their own experience; even harder for a family to accept and see the addict’s behavior as a cry for help.
Modern society finally started shifting from traditional belief about addiction and the medical community’s approach moved from being a moral choice towards a disease of chemical processes in the brain. Neuroscientific research and the disease concept evolved and new pharmacotherapeutic solutions became possible.
As a conclusion, addiction is a complex problem and the roots may be found in different layers of modern societal construct: starting from society in general and ending in family as a smallest representative unit. Respectfully, rehabilitation is a complex process as well and not only the identified patient needs help but the family of origin as well; consequently, being a way to heal the society in general.
