Physical Therapy Modalities Available for Benign Pelvic Issues

by | Oct 23, 2018 | Medical

Last month Elizabeth addressed possible complications from cancer treatments and the physical therapy options to minimize their effects. This month she will explain the modalities available for benign pelvic floor issues.
Benign pelvic issues include urinary and fecal incontinence, urgency, frequency, retention and incomplete emptying; pelvic organ prolapse; vaginal, rectal, bladder and non-medical abdominal pain; constipation; sexual dysfunctions; and those occurring pre and post-natally.
Women diagnosed with any of these may assume these issues are normal during pregnancy, after delivery, with obesity or aging. Or, that surgery is their only option when Kegels fail. We assure you that this is not true! HMHs specialized Pelvic Floor PTs will work closely with your health care team to determine an appropriate diagnosis and course of treatment. Our evaluation will include an internal muscle and ligament exam as well as a thorough neurological and musculoskeletal exam of the Spine, Sacroiliac Joint and Hip regions.
Effective treatment relies on an accurate PT diagnosis. Typical causes of pelvic floor (PF) dysfunction are PF muscle weakness; poor coordination between your PF and your bladder and bowels; excessive PF tightness; surgical scar tissue restrictions; or other neurological and musculoskeletal issues. Sometimes the cause may be as simple as poor posture and toileting habits, sitting too long or over exercise.
Treatments are individualized to meet your lifestyle needs and may include manual therapy, internal electrical stimulation, biofeedback, cold laser, and an individualized exercise program. Your PT will work closely with the exercise trainers at HMH fitness center in developing a safe and lifetime fitness program to maintain resolution of your pelvic floor issues.
