The Amgen Tour
The Amgen Tour of California Comes to the SCV

The Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in America, which will travel nearly 800 miles throughout California from May 15 through May 22, is back in the SCV. The sixth annual event will be another spectacular racing competition for fans.
Santa Clarita will host the start of the final stage of the race with riders racing to the overall finish in Thousand Oaks, completing more than 800 miles of an eight-day event.

On January 11, 1998, the Saugus High School Softball team lost one of their own, 18 year old Lauren Blaire.  Lauren was a catcher for the Centurions and a senior at Saugus when she was tragically killed by a drunk driver while she was waiting at a red light at Plum and Bouquet Canyon.

If we can remember when new recreational parks started coming to the Santa Clarita Valley, we’ll realize it was back in 1989 when Begonias Lane Park, Creekview Park, Circle J Ranch Park, the Sports Complex, and many other facilities opened up for the community.  Among these was Santa Clarita’s very first skate park, which was a hit in the community right from the start.  Skaters from all levels and even BMX cyclists enjoyed spending their days on the 12,000 square foot facility for a decade.

The Santa Clarita City Council has approved the Community Services Grant Committee’s Project Recommendations for the Fiscal Year of 2010-11 in the amount of $80,000, which are being awarded to 20 local non-profit organizations serving the Santa Clarita Valley.
