Long appreciated by his patients for superior care, patient education, and shared decision-making, Vinod Assomull, MD, nephrologist, has been named as the recipient of the Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon Healthcare Leadership Award for his significant contributions to quality healthcare and advocacy for Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
“The services you render to this community go above and beyond just
helping patients get better,” said Congressman Howard P. “Buck” McKeon
as he presented the award to Dr. Assomull during a ceremony at the
Valencia Country Club on November 10. “Your leadership makes our
hospital and our community better, and I’m honored to be in the same
company as you and the past recipients of this award.”
The Healthcare Leadership Award was created by the Henry Mayo Newhall
Memorial Hospital in 2006 to honor individuals or companies who
exemplify the values of Henry Mayo and who support the mission to
improve the health of our community through compassion and excellence
in healthcare services. It was named for Congressman Howard “Buck”
McKeon for his consistent and demonstrated support for quality
healthcare in the Santa Clarita Valley.
“I am very pleased that Dr. Assomull is receiving this recognition,”
said Roger Seaver, president and CEO of Henry Mayo. “Through the years
he has been recognized by peers, patients, administrators and other
healthcare leaders as an advocate for the best in healthcare.”
Assomull’s support for Henry Mayo includes volunteering his time and
resources as a member of the Hospital’s Board of Directors for the last
13 years, and served as Chairman of the Board 2005-2007. He is a member
of the Executive Committee of the Board and Finance Committee. A member
of Henry Mayo’s medical staff since 1979, he served as Chief of Staff
1998 and 1999, and the Department of Medicine Chairman in 1990 and 1991.
“Dr. Assomull’s extraordinary contributions to improve the quality and
accessibility of healthcare in the Santa Clarita Valley include
handling challenging issues with diplomacy and benevolence,” added
Seaver. “He promotes the best interest of the hospital, and playing a
vital role as physician champion for capital campaigns to benefit new
and expanded hospital services to meet the needs of patients today and
in the future.”
“I am honored to receive this special award,” said Assomull.
“Supporting the hospital is easy for me because it could not be a
better cause for the community than to ensure that we have first-class
healthcare services. I pledge to do everything I can to make Henry Mayo
the best place for patients to get care and the best place for doctors
to practice.”
The inaugural Healthcare Leadership Award was presented to Congressman
Howard “Buck” McKeon by the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in
2006 for his consistent and demonstrated support for quality healthcare
in the Santa Clarita Valley. His advocacy for federal support for
trauma services and hospital expansion has been important in the
progress of healthcare in the Santa Clarita Valley, as has his
leadership and guidance as a past member and chairman of the Hospital
Board of Directors.
Past recipients include Roberta Veloz in 2007 and Gary Cusumano in 2008.
