We, at The Magazine of Santa Clarita, are so pleased to get the opportunity to participate in as many of these non-profit events. Showing our support for these worthy organizations is important to us. Because of our commitment to the community, Moe and I were recently notified that we will be the recipients of this year’s American Cancer Society’s Legacy of Hope Award for Community Awareness Leadership. We are extremely honored to be given this distinct award.
We are excited to feature some of the participants of the Frontier Toyota/Henry Mayo Drive Safe Golf Classic on the cover of this issue. Tee off for a great time at the Golf Classic on Saturday, May 21 at the Valencia Country Club, all to benefit the hospital’s emergency room and trauma services. See page 6 for more details.
April showers bring May flowers, so spend the first day of May at the Child & Family Center’s Taste of the Town, and indulge in delicious food, wine and beer at the Mann Biomedical Park. To learn more about this much-anticipated event, see page 19.
Ante up for a great time at the Soroptimist International of SCV’s 3rd Annual Fiesta Poker Tournament on Saturday, May 7, at the Elks Lodge in Canyon Country. Turn to page 27 for more information.
It’s a beautiful month for a walk or a run, so join the Jaycees as they raise money for the Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund’s Fight It! 5K on Saturday May 14. New this year is the 10K option. For details, see page 12.
If you’re eager for more walking and running, Relay For Life will have two events this month to benefit the American Cancer Society. The first ever Relay For Life Castaic will begin on May 14 and go until May 15 at the beautiful Castaic Lake. Event details are on page 24. Relay For Life SCV will be held the following Saturday, beginning on May 21. Join thousands, as they will also show their support for the ACS. The event will take place at Central Park in Santa Clarita. Relay For Life SCV details are on page 35.
The weather is perfect in the SCV at this time of the year, perfect for a bike ride. For great fun and food, join the Bikes & Bites, a Canyon Country Campus Food Fest and Fun Ride on Saturday, May 14. See page 26 for more information.
After all the walking, running and biking, you may build up an appetite, so enjoy some of the delicious events focused on food and great causes. Top culinary masters will team up for a mouth-watering event on Sunday, May 15 at the Gourmet Food Truck Festival and Classic Car Show that will take place at the Valencia Auto Center from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. See facing page for more event details. On the same day, you can also enjoy some delicious food truck delicacies at the SCV Jewish Food and Cultural Festival at the College of the Canyons in Valencia, this event will run from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. See page 31 for details.
You won’t want to miss out on a night of great music and talent. On Saturday, May 21, enjoy 30 national and local acts at the Golden Valley Amphitheater for the Summer Meltdown Autism Awareness & Social Inclusion Concert, produced by the students of Yes I Can. For concert details, turn to page 32.
It’s finally time for the anticipated Amgen Tour of California. Get ready as hundreds of professional cyclists will return to our city, as Santa Clarita will host the start of the final stage of the 8-day race on Sunday, May 22. For Amgen race details, see page 22.
Also on Sunday, May 22, join the Soroptimist International of Greater Santa Clarita Valley as they will host their third annual High-Heel-a-Thon. Strap on your stilettos for a good cause. See page 36 for details.
There’s lot to do this May, so be sure and enjoy it, and to all the mothers, have a wonderful Mother’s Day.
And finally, the last Monday of this month marks Memorial Day. Take a moment to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice during their military service for our country, and for those who are currently fighting for many of the freedoms we enjoy today.
