The summer night is like a perfection of thought. ~ Wallace Stevens
Summertime in Santa Clarita is simply magnificent. With the warm days followed by cool summer evenings, it makes for the perfect setting for spending time outdoors, barbecuing with friends, enjoying some poolside fun, taking a lovely evening stroll or attending one of the many events going on in our Valley.
One of these fun-filled events that will take place in June is the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley’s much-anticipated Auction, our cover story this month. Serving as chairs of the event are Reena and Tony Newhall, who also served as the Auction’s first chair 40 years ago. We would like to thank Reena for her help in organizing the cover photo shoot, along with Chorus Line for donating their costumes and Gary Choppé for photography. This year’s Thriller Auction-A Flashback to the 80’s will be held on Saturday, June 4, in the Valencia Industrial Center. All proceeds from the auction will help fund after-school programs that inspire 2,500 local kids to reach their full potential. For details about the event, turn to page 8.
Congratulations to community members Candy Spahr and Harry Bell who were named 2011 Man and Woman of the Year. Candy and Harry both have made a lasting impression with their volunteer efforts, contributions and their dedication to making our community a better one to live. Learn more about Candy and Harry and see a list of all the nominees on page 6.
Delicious gourmet food coupled with classic cars make for one popular event in the SCV-the Gourmet Food Truck Fest and Classic Car Show. The gourmet food truck craze took over Santa Clarita as over 18,000 people were in attendance. The event proved to be yet another success as funds raised were used to benefit our SCV Sheriff’s Foundation. For pictures, turn to page 10.
Just a few weeks ago, thousands showed their support at the American Cancer Society’s popular 24-hour event, Relay For Life SCV. It’s amazing to see the outpouring of support as people lined the tracks at Central Park for a great cause.
Crowds also gathered last month as cyclists made their way to our Valley at the much-anticipated Amgen Tour of California, one of the nation’s most successful cycling race. The Tour brought drama and excitement as thousands assembled at the starting line of the final stage to cheer on the cyclists.
Music fans get ready, as there are many entertaining events this month for you to enjoy. Begin the month with the Lexus of Valencia Jazz & Blues Concert Series beginning on Friday, June 10 at Town Center Drive in Valencia. The series will run for 12 weeks. See page 22 for details about artists and performance times.
Don’t Stop Believin’ and join the Repertory East Playhouse as they will host their annual benefit, Summer Evening with the REP on Saturday, June 25. SCV favorite and number one Journey Tribute Band, Don’t Stop Believin’ (DSB) will be performing. Turn to page 12 for more information.
Summer is here, which means kids are off of school. What better way to spend your vacation than packing up a picnic basket and heading to the Westfield Valencia Town Center for WFamily Movie Nights on the Patios. Every Tuesday evening during the month of June, you can enjoy a movie with the family for free. See page 26 for a list of the movie lineup.
