On June 18 the Santa Clarita Ballet Company will present ballet to the community in a way SCV has not yet experienced: outdoors, in contemporary form, to live jazz, and free to the public.
Performing at CalArts Wild Beast, the Santa Clarita Ballet Company will be the opening act for the 2011 inaugural season of Santa Clarita’s new Summer Music Series, a free event presented at a variety of venues throughout town this summertime. The Wild Beast is the location of the first event in the series and is an ideal setting to experience ballet outside the box, so to speak. This unique performance space seats over 750 guests in a beautiful amphitheater designed by Hodgetts & Fung, the architectural firm associated with the redesign of the Hollywood Bowl.
Taking classic ballet in a contemporary direction, Santa Clarita Ballet will present Bone Rhythms, an original ballet choreographed by Santa Clarita Ballet’s Artistic Director Carol Guidry. The inspiration for Bone Rhythms comes from a deep internal awareness of the dancer’s body, or literally bone movement that becomes beautiful through ballet. This is their second original work for contemporary ballet. In 2008, SCBC presented B-Song G-Side as part of a program that also included the classic ballet scene Kingdom of the Shades from La Bayadere. The audience responded with such favor that B-Song G-Side was restaged the following year in two nearly sold out shows.
Bone Rhythms will be performed live to the eminent Los Angeles indie-jazz collective, Build An Ark. This ensemble of seasoned and young jazz talent has attracted a loyal worldwide audience. Known for its soulful groove reminiscent of the 1970s underground jazz scene, Build An Ark’s approach to jazz will assimilate beautifully with a contemporary ballet piece like Bone Rhythms.
SCBC chose the Summer Music Series as the ideal opportunity to introduce a broader audience to ballet specifically because the event is free to the public, is in an interesting outdoor venue, and is part of a larger music series. Offering a program free to the public is just one way the Santa Clarita Ballet can give back to the community while also maintaining their commitment to elevate cultural arts programming for all residents of Santa Clarita.
