Why? Has cancer ever touched your life or the life of a family member or friend? Almost certainly it has. If so, then you have a reason to “Relay” on May 19, at Central Park in Saugus.
This marathon 24-hour event will celebrate, honor, remember, and “fight back” on behalf of those stricken by or lost to cancer!
The Santa Clarita Valley Relay For Life event is one of the largest “Relays” in California (the 3rd largest and growing!). We expect over 5,000 motivated participants this year. The Santa Clarita Valley is one of 5,100 communities in the U.S. that “Relay” to raise funds to support the efforts of the American Cancer Society (ACS) to fight cancer. Worldwide, 19 other countries also Relay! This flagship event is a key milestone in the ACS’s efforts to raise funds that are used to support research to fight back against cancer, find cures, save lives, and help cancer victims get well and stay well. Donations also support local ACS offices in every community that directly benefit cancer patients.
Our local Santa Clarita American Cancer Society office and volunteers assist local cancer patients in many ways, such as providing rides to treatments, providing needed information and educational resources, building local Survivor and Caregiver Networks, and much more.
There is something for everyone at this year’s Relay For Life. Survivors are honored and celebrated with a free breakfast, T-shirt and medal, and walk in the prestigious “Survivor Lap”. Caregivers can visit Relay Village and explore special activities. Team members can help fundraise and walk laps on a Relay Team. Everyone can participate in many carnival-type activities located around the track.
Food is plentiful, and bands play music throughout the day and evening. Relay Village - where anyone can rest, chat or enjoy activities - honors Survivors and Caregivers. A special Celebrate Ceremony is slated for 9 a.m. Saturday morning, and at 9 p.m., the evening will culminate with a very moving Remember Ceremony, where participants are invited to light a candle and memorialize those family and friends that they’ve lost to cancer. The event ends Sunday morning after the 9 a.m. Fight Back Ceremony and final lap.
Anyone can participate as a Survivor or Participant by registering online at www.SCVRelay.org – or just show up and register onsite.
If cancer has touched you, join us for this empowering event. If you cannot attend, please consider making a contribution on our website or through our local ACS office at the address below.
