In order to understand what we mean when we say Dr.’s Remedy Nail Polish is non-toxic you need to know a little bit about the ingredients in ordinary nail polish. Almost all of the name brand nail polish you find on department store and drugstore shelves contains what the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has dubbed the “toxic trio.” The toxic trio is formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP (dibutylphthalate).
Formaldehyde has been identified as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In laymen’s terms that means it probably causes cancer. It also causes allergic reactions such as watery eyes, burning in the back of the throat, headaches, and labored breathing in a relatively high percentage of the population.
Toluene can cause eye irritation, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Laboratory studies have also linked toluene to a higher incidence of birth defects which is why it is very important that pregnant women use either non-toxic nail polish or none at all. Toluene has been restricted in drinking water in the United States because it has been linked to kidney and liver damage.
DBP exposure has also been linked to birth defects, as well as fertility problems. A recent study connecting DBP and other phthalates to early onset puberty in girls and hindered testes development in boys prompted Congress to ban the use of these chemicals in toys. DBP has not yet been banned from cosmetics marketed to little girls and pre-teens.
One of the reasons we’re so fond of Dr.’s Remedy Nail Polish is that whether you’re a pregnant woman, a mother letting her daughter experiment with using mommy’s makeup, or just a woman who would like to paint her nails without having to worry about increasing her risk of contracting breast cancer; you can use this product and it won’t make you sick. In fact, it has ingredients that are actually good for you. Plus, it stays on your nails without chipping as long or longer than ordinary nail polish. What’s not to like?
