The Santa Clarita Regional Theatre is presenting the world’s most beloved musical, The Sound of Music at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons. This was the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein and the motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.
When a postulant (Maria, played by Jill Kocalis Scott) proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of widowed naval Captain von Trapp (Mark Weitz). Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon, they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The fact that the play is based on a true story makes it especially memorable. The von Trapp Family Singers became one of the most famous family musical groups in the world.
This lavish production will end its run at the Performing Arts Center on August 12. In addition to the visual spectacle, the show features some of the most memorable songs ever written for musical theatre, including The Sound of Music, Climb Every Mountain, Favorite Things, Edelweiss, and Sixteen Going on Seventeen and will be accompanied by a live orchestra.
The Santa Clarita Regional Theatre is a division of the Canyon Theatre Guild, and presents a large musical each season in the larger venue at COC. The Sound of Music will have its final performances on Saturdays at 8 p.m. on August 4 and 11; Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. will be August 5 and August 12. Ticket prices range from $12 to $29 depending on seat location and Junior or Senior discounts. Group rates are also available. The SCRT is offering free tickets to the unemployed and their families, with proof of unemployment, and depending on availability.
Tickets are now on sale at the SCRT/CTG box office, 661-799-2702. The box office is located in the CTG lobby at 24242 Main Street, Newhall, but all performances will be at the Performing Arts Center. Take the whole family to see this inspiring musical.
