News From SCV Zonta Club

The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Linda Magara, a native of Uganda; she is majoring in Business Administration/Accounting at The Master’s College in Santa Clarita.  Some of her volunteer activities include the Habitat for Humanity Youth Program, Noah’s Ark Babies Home serving orphans, and One Hope tutoring inner-city children.  She aspires to increase the financial literacy of her country through the development of a financial literacy center and earn a PhD in accounting and finance.  Ms. Magara is eligible to compete at the District level with a potential of receiving one of twelve  $5,000 scholarships to be awarded by the Zonta International Foundation.
Zontian and Mayor Pro Tem, Marcia McClean installed the Club as well as foundation officers for the coming year at Le Chene.  Karla Edwards will lead the Club for the coming year as president and Adele Macpherson will preside as president of the Foundation.
Peggy Edwards was named Santa Clarita Zontian of the Year in “making a difference” for her efforts supporting Zonta and the community.  Peggy spearheaded the Community Task Force in 2008-2009, which was comprised of various organizations in the community.  Significant needs were identified regarding assistance for women to become more self-sufficient; this resulted in the development of LifeForward workshops presented by Zonta to provide skills and knowledge for these women.
Zonta International Convention will begin June 24 and conclude June 30 in San Antonio, Texas.  Club member, Dianne Curtis, will be installed as ZI president and will preside over the organization for the next two years representing Zonta at the United Nations and other organizations to foster the objectives of Zonta which are to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women at the global and local level through service and advocacy; work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of executives in business and the professions; promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, implement service programs, and provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their communities, their nations, and the world.  The Club is proud of Dianne in her achievements and will be available to assist Dianne in any capacity she may need for a successful biennium.
