It was dawn, the end of the night shift, and one-by-one the nurses of Providence Holy Cross Medical Center filed into the hospital chapel for a brief ceremony. They received their Magnet Hospital pins, signifying that the Mission Hills hospital’s 800 nurses rank among the best in the nation.
Providence Holy Cross was redesignated earlier this year as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, an honor that reflects patient care and quality outcomes as well as innovation in improving the art and science of nursing. Providence Holy Cross is the only Magnet Hospital in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys.

Having had three children, I can’t imagine doing anything that could possibly jeopardize my baby being healthy. I just reread an article on pregnant women with periodontal disease (gum and bone disease) having a 7.5 percent higher chance of delivering low birth weight premature babies. As a dentist I find this hard to accept. Every prenatal book from What to Expect When You’re Expecting to The American Academy of Pediatrics books stressed the need for good oral hygiene and prenatal dental care.
